Choosing the right pallet size is not just about fitting your products — it is about optimizing your entire supply chain. The wrong pallet size can lead to wasted warehouse space, inefficient truck loading, increased shipping costs, and even product damage.

The most common pallet size in North America is the 48x40 inch pallet, also known as the GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet. This size accounts for approximately 35% of all pallets produced in the US and is the standard for grocery, retail, and general manufacturing.

However, the GMA pallet is far from the only option. Here are the most common pallet sizes and the industries that use them.

48x40 inches (GMA) — The most widely used. Standard for grocery, retail, and most consumer goods. Fits perfectly in standard 53-foot trailers (two pallets wide, with a row of 20 pallets per trailer).

42x42 inches — Commonly used in the telecommunications and paint industries. Provides a square footprint that works well for cylindrical containers like paint cans and telecom cable spools.

48x48 inches — Popular in the chemical, beverage, and drum industries. The larger square footprint accommodates 55-gallon drums efficiently.

48x45 inches — Used primarily in the automotive industry. Slightly wider than the GMA pallet to accommodate automotive parts bins.

44x44 inches — The standard for the chemical and beverage industries, particularly for 55-gallon drum storage.

36x36 inches — Used for smaller loads and in industries where space efficiency for smaller products is paramount, such as beverage distribution.

When choosing a pallet size, consider your product dimensions, warehouse racking systems, truck trailer dimensions, and industry standards. A pallet that is too large wastes space, while one that is too small may not provide adequate support.

At Bakersfield Pallet Co., we stock all standard sizes and can source or build custom dimensions to meet your exact specifications. Our team can help you analyze your needs and recommend the most efficient pallet size for your operation.
