Complete Size Reference
The following reference covers every standard pallet size in common commercial use in North America. For each size, we provide detailed dimensions (both imperial and metric), weight capacity ratings, construction specifications, common applications, and availability at Bakersfield Pallet Co.
Weight capacity ratings listed are for standard construction pallets in good condition. Actual capacity depends on construction quality, material type (softwood vs. hardwood), load distribution, and how the pallet is supported (floor, racking, or stacked). Contact Oakley Thorne for capacity verification on specific applications.
Dynamic load capacity refers to the maximum weight when the pallet is being moved by a forklift or pallet jack. Static load capacity refers to the maximum weight when the pallet is stationary on a flat surface. Racking load capacity (the weight a pallet can support when sitting on rack beams with the center unsupported) is typically 60-70% of the dynamic rating and depends on beam spacing.

The 48x40 GMA pallet is the workhorse of the North American supply chain. Adopted by the grocery industry in the 1960s and standardized by the Grocery Manufacturers Association, this size now accounts for more than one-third of all pallets in circulation in the United States. Its dimensions are optimized for US truck trailers: two pallets placed 40-inch side by side equal 80 inches, fitting within the standard 98.5-inch trailer interior with room for loading.
Common Applications:
- Grocery and food distribution — the size is literally designed for this industry
- General retail — Walmart, Target, Costco, and virtually all major retailers standardize on this size
- Consumer packaged goods (CPG) — personal care, household chemicals, paper products
- Agriculture — fresh produce, nuts, dairy, and packaged agricultural products
- Pharmaceutical distribution — standard for drug and medical supply distribution
- E-commerce fulfillment — the default pallet for Amazon and other fulfillment networks
Construction Variants:
Available in stringer (2-way and notched 4-way) and block (full 4-way) construction. Standard deck uses seven top boards and five bottom boards. Heavy-duty variant adds center stringer and additional deck boards for loads exceeding 2,500 lbs.
Availability at Bakersfield Pallet Co.:

The 42x42 pallet is the second most commonly used size in North America. Its square design makes it ideal for products with circular footprints, such as paint cans, wire spools, and telecommunications cable reels. The square shape ensures that cylindrical products are supported equally from all sides, reducing the risk of load shifting during transport.
Common Applications:
- Telecommunications — cable reels, equipment racks, and fiber optic spools
- Paint and coatings — 1-gallon and 5-gallon paint cans optimize perfectly on this footprint
- Adhesives and sealants — cylindrical containers and pails
- Wire and cable — spools and reels of electrical, data, and industrial cable
- Printing and packaging — large paper rolls and printing supply containers
Construction Variants:
Typically block construction for full 4-way entry. Standard deck configuration with six boards per side. Center board spacing optimized for drum and cylinder footprints.
Availability at Bakersfield Pallet Co.:
Stocked in Grade A and Grade B. Typical inventory of 200-500 pallets. Larger quantities available with 3-5 day lead time. New construction available on request.

Understanding Pallet Entry Types
4-Way Entry
Forklifts and pallet jacks can access the pallet from all four sides. Most common and most versatile. Uses block or notched stringer construction.
4-way entry is essential for operations that need to access pallets from any direction — automated warehouses, retail distribution centers, and any facility where dock orientation varies. Block pallets provide the most unrestricted 4-way access, while notched stringer pallets offer partial 4-way entry (full fork entry from two sides, partial entry from the stringer sides).
2-Way Entry
Can only be accessed from two sides (typically the wider side). Uses solid stringer construction. Stronger but less flexible for handling.
2-way entry pallets are structurally stronger because the solid stringers provide continuous support along the full length of the pallet. They are preferred for heavy loads and applications where the loading direction is always known. Common in manufacturing environments with fixed material flow patterns.
Stringer Pallets
The most common construction type. Three parallel boards (stringers) run the length of the pallet, with deck boards nailed across them. Notching the stringers allows partial 4-way entry. Cost-effective and widely available.
Block Pallets
Nine blocks (3x3 pattern) support the deck boards, providing true 4-way fork entry. Stronger than stringer pallets and preferred for automated systems. Slightly higher cost due to additional construction complexity.
Hybrid / Combination
Combines elements of both stringer and block construction. Block supports at the corners and center with stringers along the perimeter. Offers 4-way entry with stringer-like economics.
Understanding Weight Capacity Ratings
Pallet weight capacity is not a single number — it depends on how the pallet is loaded and supported. Understanding the three capacity types helps you choose the right pallet and avoid overloading.
Dynamic Load Capacity
Typically 2,000-3,000 lbs
The maximum weight when the loaded pallet is being lifted and moved by a forklift or pallet jack. This is the most conservative rating because the pallet must resist the dynamic forces of acceleration, braking, and turning while being transported. Always use this rating when specifying pallets for your operation.
Static Load Capacity
Typically 6,000-9,000 lbs
The maximum weight when the loaded pallet is sitting on a flat, solid surface (like a warehouse floor) and is not being moved. The pallet is fully supported from below, so it can handle significantly more weight than when being lifted. Static rating is 2-3x the dynamic rating for most pallet types.
Racking Load Capacity
Typically 1,500-2,000 lbs
The maximum weight when the pallet is placed on rack beams with the center of the pallet unsupported. This is the most demanding configuration because the pallet must span the gap between the beams without excessive deflection. Racking capacity depends heavily on beam spacing — wider beams mean lower capacity.
